Have you seen these things?
Here’s a list of things I’m currently hunting for. Many of these items could be purchased on eBay, but I’m cheap. I’ll be looking at thrift stores, estate sales, and garage sales for these things. If you are a lover of the hunt, too, please keep an eye open and let me know if you spot any of these things. If you have a similar wish list, feel free to send it to me and I’ll let you know if I run across any of your missing treasures.
Singer Featherweight 221 sewing machine - My grandmother was a serious quilter. She had more fabric and sewing stuff in her house than I think I’ve ever seen in one place. Some of my best memories of her were at the annual Quilt Show in Burton, Ohio. She would set up a shop there and sell whatever she had collected in the last year - everything from quilts to fabric to darning eggs - and I would go to help her manage it all. I wasn’t into the quilting part of it all then, but I loved the business of it all. It was fun to see the same people come back each year to see what treasures Dorothy had uncovered that year. One thing she really loved were the Singer Featherweight machines. I don’t know how, but she and my grandfather would find these things all over the place. Most of them were broken or incomplete, but Grandpa could fix anything. They cleaned them up, fixed what needed to be fixed, and sold them each year at the show. I have never seen such happy people as the ones who were lucky enough to take home one of those machines for themselves. Now that I am into the sewing/quilting part of that whole business, I’ve decided that I want one for myself.
Loopin’ Louie is a tradition at my family’s Christmas Eve festivities. After dinner and presents were taken care of, the children (the youngest among us is now 19…oldest is 30 [that's me]) would break out Loopin’ Louie and have a showdown. The game has survived well, but we’re down one chicken and I fear that with the next generation getting their hands on it (Alex), more pieces will soon turn up missing. I’d like to find at least one incomplete game to use for missing pieces and several complete games to give to my cousins as they start their own traditions. My friend ankaisa from Finland shocked and surprised me by sending me Looping Louie all the way from Finland! I was completely thrilled and immediately put it all together and sat down to play with Alex. It’s just as much fun as it ever was! Thanks, ankaisa!
Muzzy - German 1 and 2 (VHS or DVD) - We borrowed this from the library, but we can only keep it for two weeks at a time. Alex loves watching it, and it would be great to have sets of our own. I’ve heard they can be found at library sales, but I’ve checked the Friends of the Library room at our library and haven’t had any luck. I’m keeping my eyes open, though!
